Varanasi, these Saffron-clad devotees of Shiva known called "Kanwarias" have collected water from the river and are ready to walk back to their home town/villages to offer the water to their local Shiva temple. This they believe secures good wishes for their elders. The journey known as Kanwar Yatra is an annual journey that approximately 3 million people make over a two week period in the first month of the monsoon according to the Hindu calendar. Pilgrims walk mostly barefoot from their homes to various auspicious spots along the path of the Ganga. First, north to south from Jammu Tawi to Kanyakumari in 2008 followed by the west coast to east from Okha to Guwahati and back in 2009. I was trying to get a measure of the giant that India is by travelling and attempting to engage with the people that use it's railway network. By recording different “types” of people against the consistent backdrop of the train, the camera granted me the license to interact and stare at my travel companions. The portraits were made in collaboration with my subjects despite the repressive connotations of it's typological framework. I wanted to experiment with these contradictory approaches and question whether the ethnographic nature, limits the reading of these images. Having collected holy water from Gomukh, the source of the Ganga in Uttarakhand, I wandered through old pedestrian routes in the Himalayas following the path of the river. Walking through the landscape, I encountered pilgrims and devotees, some who were travelling, others settled along the banks of the river seeking enlightenment in one way or another.
